Transfer Student Resources
One of our goals at UMass Amherst is providing transfer students with the information and support necessary to make campus feel like home. We understand that the transfer student journey is significant and we are committed to your success. You’ll find in this page a number of opportunities that’ll help you get connected and informed during your transition to campus. If you have any questions along the way, please let us know!
Transfer Success Seminar
We’re excited you chose to be here at UMass Amherst!
As a transfer student, you probably have many questions about your new campus and community! You should consider enrolling in the Transfer Success Seminar. In this seminar, you’ll learn the importance of, and how to access the many resources and services designed to support your academics and your personal life on-campus. You’ll identify programs you may want to be a part of, connect with other transfer students, and learn a lot about UMass! To enroll in the Transfer Succes Seminar, connect with your advisor or enroll on SPIRE before Add/Drop.
Transfer Residential Academic Programs (RAP)
For fall 2023 we will offer two Transfer RAPs: one in McNamara Hall in Sylvan Residential Area and one in John Adams Hall in Southwest Residential Area.
- MacNamara has suite style rooms
- John Adams Hall has single gender floors
Check the Transfer RAP and How to Join pages on the RAP website for information about Transfer RAPs and instructions on how to join one.
Joining a Transfer RAP is a wonderful opportunity to get acclimated to the UMass community, learn about all the resources and opportunities and develop relationships with fellow transfer students. Students in the Transfer RAPs will live together and enroll together in a designated section of the Transfer Success Seminar (see below for course description).
New Students Orientation – Transfer Sessions
If you have not yet arrived on campus, please note that there are New Students Orientation sessions designed specifically for transfer students. If you are planning to arrive in the fall, you will sign up for a Summer Transfer Session. If you are planning to arrive in the spring, you will sign up for a Winter Transfer Session. Enrolling in either of these sessions will set you up to begin learning all you need to know about transitioning to campus.

Did you know?
Transfer students make up a big part of UMass!
This fall, we welcomed 1,185 transfer students to campus. That's almost 1 in 5 of our new undergrads!
Transfer students come from all over the world, with 5 different countries and 40 states represented. They also have a wide range of ages, from 17 to 63. The average age is 21.
We're so grateful for the diversity that transfer students bring to our campus. They add a unique perspective and experience to our community. We're so glad you're all here!
Here are some specific examples of how transfer students add to the UMass experience:
- They bring a wealth of knowledge and experience from their previous schools.
- They can offer a different perspective on the world and on college life.
- They can help to create a more diverse and inclusive campus community.
- They can serve as mentors and role models for other students.
If you're thinking about transferring to UMass, I encourage you to do it! Transfer students make a big difference on our campus, and we're always looking for new ways to welcome them.
