For Faculty: Best Practices with Student Veterans in the Classroom

One of the advantages of attending a large university like UMass Amherst is the range of support services we are able to offer to all students. If the campus resource has identified a contact person for student veterans feel free to contact that individual or visit the websites by clicking the provided link. 
 

Air Force ROTC

Air Force ROTC is an excellent scholarship opportunity where you can also earn a monthly stipend while working towards your degree and a commission as an Air Force officer.
 

Army ROTC

Army ROTC offers returning vets who attend college as regular students, the opportunity to train to become an Army Officer. Scholarships are also available.
 

Assistive Technologies Center (ATC)

The ATC is available to any student with an ADA-defined disability who requires assistance with services such as retrieval of materials from the stacks, photocopying, large print user guides, scanning assistance, screen readers, text enhancements, and text enlargers. They offer book readers, scanners, computers with speech synthesizers, text recognition software, and much more.
 

Career Services

Career Services offers: resume review, cover letter help, interviewing tips, job searching, career fairs, one-on-one appointments, career choice, etc... Career Services is also available for office hours in the SVRC.
 

Center for Counseling and Psychological Health

Center for Counseling and Psychological Health has a professional staff of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychiatric social workers, advanced practice nurses, and psychology and social work interns. CCPH provides brief individual, couples, and group psychotherapy for students and their families, while striving to foster an environment that is appropriate and welcoming for student veterans.
 

Dean of Students Office

The Dean of Students Office, Student Life Support Team will help you navigate the bureaucracy of the campus and resolve university-related problems. The staff can answer your questions, advocate on your behalf, or point you and your family in the right direction to get problems solved.
 

Disability Services

The staff at Disability Services provides assistance to students with learning or physical disabilities. They help students receive accommodations in their academic work, as well as in housing, dining, transportation, and access to programs and services.
 

Center for Women and Community

The Center for Women and Community serves the very diverse cultural and linguistic populations at UMass Amherst. Their programs include information and referral on a variety of issues and concerns; 24-hour rape crisis service; counseling; support groups; training and community organization on issues of violence against women; as well as advocacy and cultural, educational, and social programs for women of color.
 

Learning Commons

The Learning Commons, located in the lower level of the W.E.B Du Bois library, unites the library, technology, and other campus services in an environment that fosters informal, collaborative work, and social interaction.
 

Learning Resource Center

Learning Resource Center (LRC) offers students a peer-supported environment to meet academic challenges. Peer-tutoring is provided on the 10th floor of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library Sunday–Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. during the semester. Supplemental Instruction is provided to specific courses with a SI leader who has successfully completed the course. OURS is a service where students can meet with a full-time staff member to identify and apply for internships locally, nationally, and even internationally.
 

Off Campus Student Life

The Off Campus Student Center (314 Student Union) offers worktables, comfortable chairs, microwaves, refrigerators, locker rentals, quick access computers with OIT printing, as well as many other amenities for students who live off campus! Student Parent Programs

The Office of Family Resources understands the challenges of parenting, particularly while managing academic and/or professional responsibilities. OFR programs and services provide UMass families with support, education, and resources.
 

Ombuds

The Ombuds Office is a neutral and confidential resource to help you resolve university-related problems. Ombuds offers informal mediation and facilitates communication between parties.  The office plays a major role in helping students navigate the university, especially in contacts with faculty related to academic matters.
 

Psychological Services Center

The PSC provides low-fee, long term psychotherapy regardless of insurance. There are no session limits, no prior approvals and there is not any required reporting to insurance companies. We also provide low-fee neuropsychological assessments, ADHD assessments and Learning Disability Assessments.
 

Student Legal Services Office

The Student Legal Services Office (SLSO) is a student-funded law office that provides free legal assistance to all fee-paying UMass Amherst students and student groups. SLSO is staffed by full-time attorneys, administrative support staff and student interns. They offer a wide range of legal advice, representation options, low-cost assistance and referrals to private attorneys.
 

The Stonewall Center

The Stonewall Center is UMass Amherst’s resource center providing cultural and educational programming; LGBTQIA ally training sessions; a Speakers Bureau on LGBTQIA and ally issues; a DVD, video, and book library; information and referrals; support for individuals who experience harassment and discrimination; advocacy for LGBTQIA students at UMass Amherst; and community outreach through Queer-e, our weekly listserv of LGBTQIA and allies Five-College and local events.
 

University Health Services (UHS)

UHS is UMASS’ fully accredited health care facility with a special focus in student health. With MD’s, NP’s, nurses, CMA’s and all the support staff to accompany them. Students can be seen for preventative and sick appointments during the weekday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. UHS maintains a walk-in-facility for more urgent matters; available from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Mon.–Fri., and 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on the weekends. There are many services that UHS offers including: Pharmacy, Eye Clinic, Physical Therapy, Allergy Clinic, Lab, Radiology, Travel Medicine, Nutrition, Women’s Clinic, Acupuncture, Orthopedics, and Neurology. The UHS is well equipped to handle all student health needs, however if a service is not available the referral office will send students to an off-campus provider.
 

The Writing Center

The Writing Center offers both in-person and online tutoring. Every writer needs a reader. Writing Center tutors work with undergraduate, graduate, staff, postdoctoral, and faculty writers on any academic genre at any point in the writing process. The highly-trained tutors from a variety of disciplines help writers develop a draft, clarify an argument, gain control over sentence structure, re-organize a text, and learn to reflect on and build productive writing practices.
