This minor is available to students from any UMass Amherst major that is NOT a Stockbridge major.

The minor is intended either as a supplement to your primary major or as a topical introduction that might lead one to declare a major in applied plant and soil sciences.

To earn a minor in applied plant and soil sciences students must complete three required courses, plus 15 credits of electives within the Stockbridge School of Agriculture.

The three required courses are:

  • STOCKSCH 105: Soils (4 cr)
  • STOCKSCH 108: Introductory Botany (or equivalent) (4 cr)
  • CHEM 110 or 111: General Chemistry (4 cr)

Of the five STOCKSCH elective courses:

  • At least three credits (one course) must be at the 500 level
  • A maximum of one 100-level course is allowed

Students interested in minoring should plan their courses with a Stockbridge School faculty advisor prior to beginning the minor. Certain course selections within the minor in plant and soil sciences will be suggested to accommodate students with specific interests. For more information, email Dr. Michelle DaCosta.
