Professor Charles Schweik of the UMass Amherst School of Public Policy and the Department of Environmental Conservation has been elected the next president of the International Association for the Study of the Commons. Schweik will serve as the organization’s president-elect until 2023 and then will assume a two-year term as president.

The IASC is the world’s foremost professional organization focused on “the commons,” that is, “a broad set of resources, natural and cultural, that are shared by many people,” from shared natural resources to the “knowledge commons,” the digital resources that are collectively owned and managed via the internet. The IASC convenes a broad community of scholars, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners from across several disciplines “for the purpose of improving governance and management, advancing understanding, and creating sustainable solutions for commons, common-pool resources, or any other form of shared resource” (from the IASC website).

Charles Schweik is Professor in the School of Public Policy and in the Department of Environmental Conservation. He is the associate director of the Public Interest Technology Initiative. Learn more about his current projects here.
