Roberts Named "Spotlight Scholar"

Al Roberts Spotlight Scholar

Alsadair Roberts, director of the UMass Amherst School of Public Policy and professor in the Department of Political Science, has been named a UMass Amherst Spotlight Scholar. The program recognizes UMass faculty members "who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in research, scholarship, or creative activity."

In his Spotlight Scholar profile, Roberts discusses his new book, Can Government Do Anything Right? (Polity), which considers the widespread belief that western governments are failing and argues that, when one takes a long perspective, things are not so dire as they may seem.

He also talks about the new School of Public Policy and the crucial role it can play developing a new generation of public service leaders. “Public service is exciting, intellectually engaging, important—and they can make a difference," he says.

About the School of Public Policy: Established in 2016, the UMass Amherst School of Public Policy is a hub for research and teaching, preparing students for leadership in public service. The program’s focuses include social change and public policy related to science and technology.
