Professor Brian Sargent and students in classroom

The UMass Amherst School of Public Policy curriculum balances academic theory with professional skills development and practical experience working on projects for clients. Students graduate uniquely prepared for the professional opportunities ahead of them.

SPP prepares students to solve problems for the common good. Our comprehensive approach to integrating social justice into our research, teaching, and hands-on work has received national recognition. Other areas of strength include sustainable development and technology in governance.

Students enjoy the benefits of both small class sizes and the rich and varied offerings available at UMass Amherst. More than 20 full-time faculty and a large number of specialized faculty teach in SPP masters programs. The School of Public Policy serves as a hub for policy-related research and teaching across the UMass Amherst campus, creating opportunities for students to build their own areas of specialty based on their interests and career goals.
