Ranked Choice Voting in Principle and in Massachusetts

Event date/time:

Tuesday, July 23, 2019 - 12:00pm to 1:30pm

Laurie Johnson, lecturer in economics at UMass Amherst, and Adam Friedman, executive director of Voter Choice Massachusetts, will speak about the Ranked Choice Voting campaign in Massachusetts, which is gaining substantial traction in the press and across the nation.

In 2018, Maine became the first state in US history to use Ranked Choice Voting statewide, and Voter Choice Massachusetts is leading the effort to upgrade elections here. With 32,000 supporters, 6,000 volunteer signups, and 2,000 donors, Massachusetts is now home to the largest and most active statewide campaign to advance this reform in the nation. In this talk you’ll learn everything you’ve wanted to know about Ranked Choice Voting (RCV): the serious problems it aims to solve, what a ranked ballot looks like, how a winner is determined, where RCV is used around the US and the world, notable people and organizations who support it, why supporters consider this voting system is the most promising electoral reform within reach, and how it could transform the culture of American politics.

Free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided, including an ice cream tasting and ranking of your favorite flavors.

Please RSVP to ltjohnson@umass.edu so that we are sure to order enough refreshments and ice cream.
