The SPHHS will host a Corporate Health & Wellness Panel discussion on Friday, February 28th, from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm in the Hadley Room, Campus Center. The event will be moderated by Judi LaBranche, Department of Kinesiology. Participating organizations include:

- Health Fitness Corporation
- Worksite Wellness Council of Massachusetts
Students interested in pursuing internships and careers in the corporate health and wellness industry, along with faculty, staff, alumni and friends who are interested in learning more about the field, are encouraged to attend.
Zhenhua Liu, Assistant Professor of Nutrition, working with faculty collaborators Richard Wood and Young-Cheul Kim (Nutrition), Hang Xiao (Department of Food Science) and Tufts University’s Joel Mason, received a four-year, $499,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The grant is for a project titled “Dietary and genetic inhibition of TNF-α suppresses obesity-associated intestinal tumorigenesis via diminishing Wnt-signaling.”
Lisa Wexler, Associate Professor of Community Health Education, recently attended a two-day suicide prevention summit in Anchorage, Alaska. Hosted by the Alaska Statewide Suicide Prevention Council, the summit convened a broad group of Alaskans to collaborate on the 2012-2017 state suicide prevention plan titled “Casting the Net Upstream: Promoting Wellness to Prevent Suicide in Alaska.”
Public Health Sciences major Shirin Hakim recently appeared on the WWLP-22 News and in the Daily Hampshire Gazette. Hakim was interviewed as part of a story on local college students partnering with a local shelter to help the homeless. Hakim is the director of Craig's Doors Resource Advocates, which partners with the Amherst-based shelter Craig's Doors, to provide resources beyond a meal and a bed to the homeless.

Lauri Kalanges, MD, MPH ’04, an alumna of the Online MPH in Public Health Practice program, was recently appointed as the Deputy Director of the Office of Family Health Services (OFHS), a position within the Virginia Department of Health located in Richmond, Virginia. She also serves as the Virginia Title V director, and was recently elected as a board member on the Association of Maternal Child Health Programs.
SPHHS to Host 17th Annual Research Day on April 8th
The SPHHS will host its 17th Annual Research Day on Tuesday, April 8th, from 2:00 - 5:00 pm in the Student Union Ballroom. Students from all departments will present posters of their work which will be judged based on content and presentation. Awards are made in Research and Practice categories, and another will be presented by Delta Omega Honor Society. For more information and submission guidelines, visit our Research Day webpage.
