Anna Maria Siega-Riz, Dean of the School of Public Health and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, is serving as Chair of a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine workshop titled “Nutrition During Pregnancy and Lactation: Exploring New Evidence.”

The two-day workshop, which will be held January 28-29, 2020, in Washington, DC, will explore the state of the science on nutrients, nutritional supplements, and other nutrition-based topics relevant to pregnancy and lactation. Workshop topics will include discussion of equity in access to nutritional care for women of childbearing age. This workshop is intended to understand changes in the science since the landmark report was published in 1990-91 on the same topics that may inform the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Committee’s current work.

Founded in 1863, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine provide nonpartisan, objective guidance for decision makers on pressing issues. The work of the National Academies spurs progress by connecting understandings of science, engineering, and medicine to advising national policies and practice. They also convene workshops, symposia, and other events that bring together experts and practitioners to consider issues related to science, engineering, and medicine and their implications for policy and practice.
