Nutrition Doctoral Student Awarded NIH Internship

Sharmin Hossain, a nutrition Ph.D. candidate, has accepted a 10-week paid internship with the National Institutes of Health in Baltimore, MD. The internship will be located at the National Institute of Aging (NIA) Bayview Campus at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, and includes rigorous research and extensive data analysis.

Hossain is a fifth-year doctoral student who is working in the Nutrition Department with Chair Richard Wood for her dissertation on colorectal and breast cancer epigenetics in relationship with vitamin D and the bioactive food component sulforaphane.

She was one of 24 selected candidates out of 200 applicants this year for this internship. She will be working with Alan Zonderman, who is a co-investigator on the HANDLS (Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span) study, along with the principal investigator Michele K. Evans, M.D.

HANDLS is a 20-year longitudinal study developed in 2004 for a better understanding of the sources of persistent health disparities in overall longevity, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and is now in its fourth wave.

The project aims to address questions like: What influences the natural history of common age-related diseases; and are there early biomarkers of age-related health disparities that may enhance our ability to prevent and ameliorate the severity of these diseases?
