In a commentary published in the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Hsiao urged residents in the towns of Cummington and Plainfield, MA, to ratify town resolutions to become pollinator-friendly communities.
Ten SPHHS students representing all 4 undergraduate majors received Alumni Association Awards this spring. Awards were distributed based on outstanding academic achievements, leadership, and community service.
Three SPHHS faculty research teams, including projects led by Lorraine Cordeiro and Lindiwe Sibeko, Nutrition, Melody Slashinski, Health Promotion and Policy, and Krishna Poudel, Health Promotion and Policy, are among the fourteen UMass Amherst projects involved in the initiative.
The Beal Lecture will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, beginning at 4:00 pm in the Student Union Ballroom. Dr. Joel Mason of Tufts University will deliver a lecture titled "Micronutrients and Cancer Prevention: Making Sense of a U-shaped World."
The group will hold a networking event in Bethesda, MD, on Friday, March 31st, and another in Baltimore, MD, on Saturday, April 1st.
Hossain is a fifth-year doctoral student who is working in the Nutrition Department with Chair Richard Wood for her dissertation on colorectal and breast cancer epigenetics in relationship with vitamin D and the bioactive food component sulforaphane.
“I was very excited when I learned I had received the award, but when Claire Norton contacted me and explained how prestigious the award is I was in pure shock,” she says.
She will collaborate with colleagues in Ghana, Australia, England and the U.S. to conduct maternal health literacy research through a grant from the Worldwide Universities Network.
She comments on what to eat before, during and after exercise.
Ballom, who was also promoted to Rear Admiral, expects to earn her MPH in Nutrition degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in May 2017.
