Nutrition alumna Lauren Mahoney ’19 is the recipient of a 2021 Massachusetts Dietitians Education Foundation (MDEF) scholarship. The foundation is the charitable arm of the Massachusetts Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Every year MDEF provides scholarships to outstanding individuals seeking undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees and dietetic internships in the field of nutrition.
Mahoney, who earned her master’s degree in business and analytics from UMass this spring, will begin a dietetic internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in October. She plans to use the $1000 scholarship award, along with scholarship funds she received from the Western Area Massachusetts Dietetic Association, to help defray internship costs.
“When I found out I received this award I felt overjoyed!” says Mahoney. “I’m thankful to receive help with my internship expenses and proud that my hard work was recognized.”
After completing her dietetic internship, she hopes to work as a dietitian “within companies or schools to help transform the nutritional value of their products or what they are serving.”
