Accelerated Master of Science (4+1)

The accelerated Master of Science (M.S.) degree program offers the opportunity to students to complete the M.S. degree within one academic year plus an intervening summer. With a focus on modern challenges in statistical computing and big data as related to public health, the Biostatistics M.S. program at UMass Amherst trains students in data management, data analysis, and statistical theory. A recent McKinsey report claims that “by 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions." By providing an accelerated M.S. degree option, talented undergraduate students can speed up their path to finding a niche in this attractive and fast-growing job market.

Students who are interested need to start planning for the accelerated M.S. track by the beginning of their junior year.
