Graduate Studies

We offer M.A., M.A.T., and Ph.D. degrees. Our M.A. is geared towards recent graduates and professionals seeking to further their knowledge of, and enhance their professional opportunities in, the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world. The M.A.T. program aims to prepare future teachers to obtain a teaching licensure. We also offer an accelerated M.A. to which Spanish majors can access before graduating from their B.A.

Our Ph.D. is for those interested in becoming higher-education teachers and scholars. The doctoral program has five different concentrations, offering the opportunity to specialize in:

  • Iberian Studies.
  • Hispanic Linguistics.
  • Latin American and Latinx Studies.
  • Portuguese and Brazilian Studies.
  • Translation in the Hispanic and Lusophone World.

Our students also take courses in other departments, typically within the School of Humanities and Fine Arts.

UMass belongs to a university consortium known as the Five Colleges, which also includes Smith College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Amherst College. Our graduate students often take courses in the Five Colleges and enjoy the mentoring of their faculty. See the directory of affiliated faculty from across UMass and the Five Colleges.

Along with their M.A., M.A.T, and Ph.D. degrees, students may obtain interdisciplinary graduate certificates that are offered in conjunction with other programs and departments of the Five Colleges. These certificates include Film Studies, Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies, Advanced Feminist Studies, Cognitive Science, among others.
