What are UMass Sociology Majors Saying?

We asked students in the Sociology “Next Steps” career seminar why they chose to major in Sociology.  Here’s what they had to say:

“Why Sociology? It challenges me intellectually and makes me critically engage with my social environment every day. It has changed and shaped my worldview. Also, the professors I’ve had at UMass are engaging, smart, and always willing to help.”

“I became a sociology major the first day of taking Gender and Society. I was instantly drawn to the way sociology views social issues and how it can be used to study society, question what is really going on, and make a plan of action in order to really see a social change.”

“It has allowed me to build skills in writing and critical thinking as well as exposed me to several different careers which are either directly or indirectly affected by sociological research.”

“Three reasons why I love sociology:
1. Surrounded by people passionate about the same things I am which fuels my own passion.
2. You can never stop learning, understanding, and interpreting the world around you.
3. I’ve come to realize that studying sociology is exactly what I am supposed to be doing.”

“Sociology has instilled in me a passion for establishing equality, for advocating on behalf of people who are damaged by stereotypes, violence, low access to resources and understanding why that is a problem.”
