Transferring to UMass Sociology from Another School

The UMass Sociology Department receives a number of transfer students each fall and spring from a variety of universities, colleges, and community colleges. Often these students are interested in studying Crime & Law, Social Work, Social Research, Social Inequality, or another topic within sociology.

Preparing to Transfer

Though it is not required, students hoping to apply to the University of Massachusetts' Sociology program can prepare to enter the major by taking an introductory-level Sociology course, Introduction to Statistics, and possibly another sociology-focused course so that they have a better understanding of the field before entering the University. A maximum of five (5) transfer courses may be used to fulfill major requirements.

While taking these courses cannot guarantee admission to UMass Amherst, it can be helpful to have them complete so that you can delve into the Sociology curriculum upon your arrival.

Advising and the Transition to UMass Sociology

After you have been accepted to the University, you will be scheduled for a Transfer Orientation Session. It is very important that you make every effort to attend one of these sessions since it will help you become familiar with the UMass Amherst campus and will introduce you to Sociology major advisors who will help you to put together your first semester schedule and enroll you for classes.

Once the semester has begun, be sure to schedule an appointment with one of the professional Sociology advisors to check in and connect with those who will support your academic progress from entry to graduation.
