Sociology Online Major Paths

Below are some possible paths through the Sociology major online. For most of our electives, the order you take classes in is up to you – and you can decide based on your interest, schedule, and whether the courses being offered that semester are of interest to you. Students are welcome to take courses at the pace that suits them. However, we do strongly suggest starting the major with your 100-level Sociology course, as well as with a statistics course. We recommend taking SOCIOL 213: Data Collection and Analysis (statistics is a prerequisite), and SOCIOL 302: Sociological Theory, in your sophomore or junior year, and SOCIOL 301: Junior Year Writing in your junior year. We also suggest starting with 200-level electives before moving on to 300-level electives. Other than that, as long as you complete all of the courses required for the major, the order does not matter.

You are always encouraged to meet with your advisor before planning your courses each semester. We strongly recommend taking your Gen ed requirements at the beginning of your time at UMass, so that you can explore a range of different subject areas early in your college career.
