Seminar on Research Methodology
About the Seminar
Florian Carl, PhD student at the social movement school in Florence, Italy, is again visiting UMass Amherst and will share his experiences and perspectives on how to do academic research in solidarity with and within marginalized communities. Carl has worked many years with Indigenous networks in Europe as an organizer, particularly around environmental issues, and is conducting research on contemporary legacies of resistance against European conquest in a Fanonian tradition. This seminar is an opportunity for participants to learn and share about challenges and possibilities when working with action research and militant ethnography. The seminar will bring up topics like ethnographic refusal, ethnographic interpellation, ethnographies of encounter, suspending damage towards communities, thick relationality, accountability and responsibility of knowledge co-production. Everyone is welcome and we are particularly inviting graduate students and faculty at the Five Colleges.
