Becoming a Peer Advisor

Sociology Peer Advisors are undergraduate Sociology majors who support fellow students in the department by providing academic advice through drop-in hours, holding educational and social events, doing outreach in classes, and promoting the major, minor, and certificates at campus-wide events.

Sociology Peer Advisors do a wide variety of tasks. Advisors work several hours a week in the office, meeting with students and answering questions about the major, courses, and general academic progress, as well as providing referrals to other campus resources. They also provide support to the Sociology Department by planning and advertising events, doing outreach to classes, and promoting the major, minor, and certificates.

The Sociology advising team provides on-the-job training, but applicants should be willing and able to: interact professionally with faculty, staff, and students; maintain privacy about student records; work proactively and with limited supervision; participate enthusiastically in departmental events; and use common office equipment.

To be considered for a Peer Advisor position for the 2024-2025 academic year, submit an application by Friday, February 23rd at 4 PM.

Please note: students accepted to be peer advisors will be enrolled in SOC 498 for fall 2024 and spring 2025, which meets on Wednesdays from 10-11 am.  This is a graded course and attendance is mandatory.
