Join us for an engaging and practical conversation about writing for The Conversation, the independent nonprofit news organization dedicated to publishing research-based articles written by academics for a general audience.

In this session, Hannah Sussman, an editor from The Conversation will share insights into what makes a compelling pitch, how the editorial process works, and why writing for a public audience matters. UMass faculty authors, Rebecca Hamlin and Paul Collins, who have published with The Conversation will discuss their experiences—from developing an idea and working with editors to translating scholarly expertise into accessible, impactful stories.

Whether you are interested in expanding the reach of your research, contributing to public discourse, or learning how to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely, this event will offer valuable guidance and practical tips.

The discussion will include time for audience questions and an open exchange about opportunities, challenges, and best practices in public scholarship. Faculty and graduate students at all stages of their careers are encouraged to attend. Lisa M. Troy, UMass Public Engagement Project Co-Director, will moderate.

Hannah Sussman will also hold office hours to pitch your writing idea to The Conversation between 1:30 and 3:00pm.
