This two-day workshop is designed to cover the basics of qualitative data analysis, for attendees with a range of qualitative research experience. We will cover researcher’s specific considerations and approaches to data analysis, from an interdisciplinary approach. In this workshop, we will cover raw data processing, data organization, best practices for anonymizing and storing confidential datasets, as well as codebook development, coding approaches to data, basic NVivo coding approaches, and special considerations for qualitative data analysis within a collaborative research group. We will practice independently and collaboratively developing analytical codebooks from datasets, coding data and structurally organizing coded themes into research findings.
Instructor: Ember Skye Kane-Lee
Ember Skye Kane-Lee is a Research Manager for the UMass Donahue Institute’s Economic and Public Policy Unit. They are an expert in mixed methods qualitative research and have consulted with researchers and organizations across the Commonwealth on projects examining aspects of structural inequality faced by organizations. Ember has extensive experience in survey-based research, content analysis, interview research, focus group research and ethnographic research. They have conducted qualitative and mixed method research in areas including the short-term rental economy, economic impacts, state population migration trends and issues of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) within organizations. Ember is a doctoral candidate (ABD) in the sociology department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she also earned her master's degree.

Registration note: The Five Colleges include: UMass Amherst, Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College. Cancellation note: In cases where enrollment is 5 or less, we reserve the right to cancel the workshop. In cases where the registrant cancels prior to the workshop, a full refund will be given with two weeks notice, and 50% refund will be given with one week notice. We will not be able to refund in cases where registrant does not notify us of cancellation at least one week prior to the beginning date of the workshop.
