This is a hands-on intro for folks who’ve opened STATA, tried a bit, and now want to feel more confident setting up and running their own projects. We’ll walk through the STATA interface, how to work with do-files (crucial if you’re planning to work on this software), and key commands for importing, cleaning, and analyzing data.

You’ll get to practice as we go, using sample files provided during the session. By the end, you’ll be able to navigate STATA comfortably, run descriptive stats, and set up a basic regression.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Navigate the STATA environment
  2. Use do-files to structure and document your workflow
  3. Import data from Excel or CSV
  4. Run basic descriptive stats
  5. Run a simple regression (time permitting)

Pre-Requisites/ Notes:

  1. You don’t need to be a STATA expert to join, but some comfort with basics, like opening data and running simple commands, will help. If you’re newer to STATA and up for a bit of a challenge, you’re welcome to join, I’ll do my best to help you keep up!
  2. The workshop uses STATA for PC, STATA for Mac is almost exactly the same, but we will go over differences if needed.
  3. If you're using your own laptop, make sure STATA is installed and ready to go. It is also available on library computers, and you may be able to borrow a laptop with STATA installed from the library as well.
