ISSR Methodology Workshop | Navigating Emotions in Qualitative Research

Instructor: Debadatta Chakraborty
Navigating emotions (both of oneself as the researcher and of others involved in the research) is a key component of the qualitative research process, especially so in qualitative methods that involve direct human interaction. However, this crucial component of qualitative research is not often discussed within methods textbooks.
This hands-on workshop will cover a variety of ways to think through this important aspect of qualitative research starting from framing/conceptualizing emotive research topics, to participant recruitment, collecting, processing and analyzing the data to assessing its impact on the researcher(s) and the research participants. We will investigate the crucial role of emotions and strategies of managing the same, as we move through each of the steps of the research processes involved in qualitative research. Drawing from the Weberian concept of Verstehen that focuses on “empathetic understanding” and from Arlie Hochschild’s concept of “emotional labor”, we will collectively analyze the dual-edged nature of emotions in research and develop feasible emotion management strategies while conducting qualitative research (Reed & Towers 2021).
This session will include how to write up emotionally-charged research observations, what resources are available for qualitative researchers, and logistical challenges and strategies for conducting research on emotionally-intense topics. Prior qualitative research experience is not required, but would be useful, as participants will be expected to draw from their own research experiences as we move through this interactive workshop.
