Qualitative interviewing techniques help researchers observe and record participants’ unique perspectives as it relates to a particular issue. Interviews can be useful data as they range through a continuum, from structured, semi-structured, to unstructured narratives. Interviews allow one to gather complex, in-depth data that is not as easily obtained through questionnaires or other quantitative approaches. The goal of this workshop is for participants to be able to recognize when to use structured, semi-structured or unstructured interviews, and then be able to generate an efficient and effective line of questioning.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the session participants will be able to

  • Utilize different interview techniques and styles
  • Develop strategies for asking rigorous questions, for in-depth responses
  • Discover how to frame and approach follow-up questions
  • Incorporate various transcription techniques
