ISSR Methodology Workshop | How to Facilitate Qualitative Focus Groups
Instructor: Ashley Carpenter
Qualitative interviewing techniques help researchers observe and record participants’ unique perspectives as it relates to a particular issue. Focus groups provide insight into how people think and provide a deeper understanding of the phenomena being studied. While a valuable research tool, surveys generally ask closed-ended questions that may limit the data that can be gained from participants. Focus groups are qualitative interviews that give the researcher the ability to capture deeper information in a more flexible way, that relies on group dynamics.
