ISSR Methodology Workshop | Facilitating Photovoice Focus Group Discussions

In this 2.5-hour workshop (on zoom), we will provide a brief overview of the basic elements of Photovoice projects followed by a more detailed look at the layers of Photovoice focus groups discussions and strategies for using SHOWeD questions. Photovoice is a qualitative research method and community organizing tool that uses a specific type of photo elicitation and focus group discussions (Photo + Voice). You will be introduced to the process of preparing for, setting up, and facilitating a Photovoice focus group discussions. We will demonstrate making slideshows, organizing photos, what types of questions to ask, and various logistics to prepare for with focus group discussions for Photovoice. This session will be mostly didactic with time for troubleshooting individual project ideas throughout. No preparation necessary.

- Understand the basics of facilitating Photovoice focus group discussions
- Strategize how to use the SHOWeD questions for Photovoice focus group discussions
- Unpack the challenges, complexities, and ethical considerations of facilitating Photovoice focus group discussions in a variety of contexts
Prerequisite: Either the Preparing for Photovoice: Design Basics workshop, the ISSR summer workshop Photovoice: Visual Elicitation meets Participatory Action Research or prior experience creating a Photovoice research design.
