About the Scholars Programs
The ISSR and CRF Scholars Programs are separate, year-long programs that provide selected UMass faculty with the time, technical expertise, peer mentorship, and expert consultation to prepare a research funding proposal to advance their broader research agenda.
ISSR Scholars are social scientists in any academic discipline or department, working to advance a broad range of themes and methodological approaches. In comparison with a matched sample of peer faculty at UMass (2012-2018), ISSR Scholars are more likely to both apply for and win funding. ISSR Scholar PIs have applied for almost nine million dollars more in funding than their colleagues, and won almost three million dollars more in funding, primarily from federal agencies. The program continues to have long-term effects over each Scholar’s career, as Scholars are more likely to continue applying for and receiving external funding than their colleagues. As PIs and co-PIs ISSR Scholars have a post-program funding rate of 39.4%, twice the success rate for National Science Foundation social science proposals.
