Funding Fridays 4: Budgeting 101: Creating a Realistic Budget

One of the challenges of writing a proposal is understanding how to effectively budget to support the research you want to do, and how to write a budget justification. Ideally, you should do this work early in the process, so that your proposed activities match up with your budget.
This workshop will focus on how to write a preliminary budget and budget justification for your proposal. Speakers include Carrie Morrison Penland (Grants and Contracts Coordinator, ISSR) and Katie Smith (Associate Director of Research Advancement and Operations). In this session we will also hold space for conversation regarding the status of budgeting federal grants under the new administration, as updates remain ongoing.
We are also thrilled to have on hand for this session our two newest Grants and Contracts Coordinators, Francis Lo and Bea Cusin.
Francis Lo (he/they) provides pre- and post-award grant administration for faculty and graduate students in the Colleges of Social & Behavioral Sciences and Humanities & Fine Arts. He has worked at UMass Amherst since 2019.
Bea Cusin (she/her) comes most recently from Five Colleges, incorporated, where she supported Development and Sponsored Programs. Bea works with faculty in Economics and Political Science.
Carrie supports faculty from Journalism, Resource Economics (Pre & Post-Award), Social Thought & Political Economy, and Sociology.
Katie works with faculty in Anthropology, Communications, Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning, Public Policy & Administration, and Resource Economics (Post Award).
All of our Grants and Contracts Coordinators can be reached at their emails above, and during their online office hours on Mondays from 1-2 pm.
Remember our Timeline to Success! Please contact our staff about your plans 6-8 weeks before the sponsor deadline.
