A MAXQDA logo.

This three-morning (9-hour) workshop brings participants from building a project, through coding and memoing, to final stage analysis of qualitative data in MAXQDA (for either Mac or Windows). It is suitable for both beginners and MAXQDA users who are looking to learn how to do more with the software.

The first day will focus on building your project file: importing, organizing, assigning variables, and beginning to code your data (text documents, surveys, web pages, videos and audio). We will cover several speaker assignation options that go beyond the basics. The second day will focus on analysis. We discuss methods for ongoing analysis as you build your code system using memos and queries to organize emerging ideas. Then we cover the use of queries to generate data portraits and visualizations, and to check the rigor of your hypotheses against the full breadth of your data. This workshop covers the use of MAXQDA not only for targeted project objectives and analyses but also as a tool for organizing, indexing, and building continuity in longer term projects with multiple research aims.

This workshop is appropriate for beginners. For those who do not already have a license for the software, a fully functional trial of MAXQDA is available and can be used during the workshop. Be sure to note the length of the trial and don’t download it too early—you want to be sure to be able to access it during the workshop.

Instructor: Erica Kowsz

Dr. Erica Kowsz is a teacher and researcher, who loves mentoring students and faculty in research design and data analysis methods. After defending her dissertation in the Department of Anthropology at UMass Amherst in December 2021, she has taken on a new role as Assistant Director for Fellowships at Wesleyan University’s Fries Center for Global Studies, where she also teaches senior undergraduates pursuing the Center's Global Engagement Minor. Her own research combines ethnography, policy and legal analysis, and archival work, so she has extensive experience working with multiple data types within qualitative data analysis software.
