Scholars Project Title:  HIV Stigma Beliefs and Precautionary Sexual Behaviors in Southern Africa

To date, Dr. Cort’s research has examined the socioeconomic incorporation of immigrant groups such as Hispanics and undocumented immigrants. He will use the ISSR residency to further a new line of scholarship focused on how HIV stigma beliefs affect precautionary behaviors such as condom use in Southern Africa. Although there is a large literature on how experiencing HIV stigma affects the precautionary behaviors of stigmatized groups (or those infected with HIV), we know little about the relationship between expressing stigmatizing beliefs (about people with HIV) and the precautionary sexual behaviors of those who do the stigmatizing or labeling. Dr. Cort’s research will begin to fill that void in the literature.
