During the fall semester of 2016, Erin Schadel, the Bursar of UMass Amherst, brought together a team of students to launch the University’s first financial wellness program, Smart About Money (SAM). Today, SAM is a part of Student Success at UMass. Student Success is dedicated to creating and contributing to campus-wide approaches and programs that increase student persistence and retention, support timely progress toward degree completion, build campus partnerships, and support holistic student learning and development through the advancement of high-impact educational practices.
SAM’s mission is to provide personal finance education to help students develop the financial skills necessary to execute wise financial decision-making skills. Smart About Money currently supports students through workshops, presentations, one-on-one personal financial coaching, and campus-wide events. Building upon the efforts and visions of the original members, Student Success and SAM aim to support the professional growth, personal growth, and many accomplishments of UMass students.
