SGA Elections Statement 3/9/2021

March 10, 2021

Dear UMass Student Body,

Until further notice, the Spring 2021 SGA elections are postponed due to a Writ of Mandamus by the SGA Judiciary. This message serves as an official notice to cease campaigning and voting for this election. As this situation evolves, we as a student governance body are doing everything in our power to ensure that there are free and fair elections. It is clear that up to this point, we have failed to hold ourselves accountable to a transparent proceeding and ensure that the students we represent are fully informed and aware of the decisions made around an important democratic process. We as an organization apologize to the students of UMass, and we will work to rectify this problem.

In the spirit of transparency, we would like to outline what has led to this so that you all can better understand the reasons behind these changes.

The original timeline set by the SGA Elections Commission was to have campaigning March 4th-March 9th, and voting starts at midnight on March 9th and go until 5:00pm on March 12th.

On Friday, March 5th, the SGA Judiciary ordered a Temporary Injunction to that the SGA election for Student Trustee, and Student Government Association President and Vice President, be temporarily stayed until such time that the Parties appear for a preliminary hearing and that candidates intending to run in the SGA Election for Student Trustee and Student Government Association President and Vice President are enjoined from conducting or participating in campaigning and from inducing anyone to the same.

On Tuesday, March 9th, the preliminary hearing was held, and afterward the Judiciary issued a Writ of Mandamus that there be at least five further days of campaigning for the positions of Student Trustee and President and Vice President before voting for those positions in the Spring 2021 General Election commences.

For these reasons, we are postponing voting for the Spring 2021 SGA Elections. We deeply apologize for the confusion, lack of communication, and lack of transparency leading up to this point. We are doing everything in our power to ensure that the elections happen justly and democratically and vow to keep the UMass student body informed as we go through this.

We thank you all for your patience around this. Please refer to the attached documents for context. Additionally, the SGA Bylaws can be accessed here
