The Center’s research will focus in the Northeast from Rhode Island to Maine and require the cross-collaboration of physical, ecological and social scientists; economists; planners; engineers; regional business leaders and local and regional decision-makers. NCCR will conduct actionable research to understand the key interactions between the human/socio-economic and ecological underpinnings of coastal systems and shifting environmental stressors in each community, to help guide practical near-term decisions that will support thriving, equitable, and just coastal communities in an uncertain future. Each research area is deeply integrated and addresses key knowledge gaps identified as barriers to progress in adaptive coastal planning in the Northeast, other areas in the US, and worldwide.
The three research areas our team will initially focus on include:
- Foundational science
- Just and participatory adaptive planning
- Transformative blue economy
