Charge:

The JTGAIA shall address generative AI topics in academic matters, including curriculum, subject matter and methods of instruction, research, admissions, libraries, and other aspects of University life which directly relate to the educational process. The JTGAIA shall make recommendations to the Faculty Senate related to the appropriate use of generative AI in academics at UMass Amherst. Specifically, the charge of JTGAIA shall include, but are not limited to the following:

  • assess potential applications of AI for use in academic units, academic personnel decisions, and student services;
  • evaluate and recommend existing and proposed uses of GAI in research, teaching, and service;
  • explore new and future opportunities for use of AI in support of teaching, research, and service;
  • Evaluate and identify gaps in training for faculty, academic support staff, and students regarding AI literacy and ethical considerations;
  • Identify areas where further policy development is needed related to ethical considerations surrounding AI deployment;
  • review and develop academic policies and guidelines pertaining to data, security, intellectual property, and responsible innovation in the context of AI; and
  • coordinate activities with the CAIAC and provide advice to the CAIAC on administrative uses of generative AI.
