Overview

Charge:
To study the place of second language proficiency in the overall design of undergraduate curricula and in
relation to diversity, equity, and inclusion by reviewing current language proficiency policies at peer
institutions; by reviewing through wide consultations with campus constituencies – including, among others,
Academic Deans, Associate Deans, and chief undergraduate advisors in the various colleges and departments,
undergraduate program directors, the departments, programs, and centers providing language instruction to
undergraduate students, the campus administration, and the student governance bodies – the current patterns
of language proficiency and instruction on this campus, and reviewing current campus policies relating to
language proficiency, and make recommendations to the Academic Matters Council, the Academic Priorities
Council, the General Education Council, the Program and Budget Council, and the Administration regarding
such changes, if any, in patterns of instruction or policies as it concludes will advance the university’s goals in
this area.

Size and Composition:

The Ad Hoc Committee shall consist of:

(a) 13 faculty, to include one from each School or College headed by a Dean, and 1 librarian appointed by the Rules Committee
(b) 1 graduate student appointed by the Rules Committee on recommendation of the President of the Graduate Student Senate
(c) 2 undergraduates appointed by the Rules Committee on recommendation of the President of the Student
Government Association
(d) A member of the Academic Matters Council appointed by its chair
(e) A member of the Academic Priorities Council appointed by its chair
(d) A member of the General Education Council appointed by its chair
(f) A member of the International Studies Council appointed by its chair
(g) A member of the Program and Budget Council appointed by its chair
(h) A member of the Status of Diversity Council appointed by its chair
(i) A member of the Undergraduate Education Council appointed by its chair
(j) The Secretary of the Faculty Senate of designee
(k) The Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education or Designee

The Chair (or Co-Chairs) shall be appointed by the Rules Committee

Reporting:

The Ad Hoc Committee should be composed early enough to begin its work no later than mid-February 2018. It
shall deliver a preliminary report no later than the last Faculty Senate meeting of the Fall 2018 term, and a final
report of its findings and recommendations no later than the last Faculty Senate meeting of the Fall 2022 term.
Should it require additional time, it will request an extension of deadline from the Faculty Senate. In no event
will the deadline be extended beyond May 2023.
