The UMass College of Social & Behavioral Sciences has crafted special programs exclusively for SBS students to provide them with opportunities for growth, excellence, mentorship, and access to life-changing programs.
SBS Pathways to Success
SBS Pathways is an integrated approach to advising, curriculum and resources designed to guide you through the development of your own goals and vision of success. This is a framework for understanding student success as purposeful engagement with the academic, co-curricular, experiential, and professional development aspects of your college education. It’s also an orientation to student support that offers you multiple forms of guidance as you pursue and integrate the various dimensions of your own personal pathways.
SBS in DC
SBS in DC is a new program that connects UMass SBS majors with UMass alumni working in and around Capitol Hill in Washington DC. Program participants will be matched with host internship sites for a 10-week summer internship, participate in an online class, and have the opportunity to network with UMass Alumni who are working in the area. Students who are selected will have their housing costs at Washington Intern Student Housing on Capitol Hill provided. SBS will also pay for one academic credit for your internship. *Additional funding to cover travel to DC, food, metro card, and other expenses may be available, dependent on financial need.
SBS in Boston
We invite our majors to apply for this new internship program at select spring 2019 internship sites with alumni in Boston. Build your skills, explore your options, make connections, and gain experience in the professional world! Internship opportunities will span the fields of media and communications. Participants will receive a full semester’s worth of credits, and your financial aid will apply. Program Dates: January, 2019 - early May, 2019. Application deadline: August 26th through Handshake.
SBS Academic Fellows Program
The Academic Fellows Program (AFP) is designed to provide specialized opportunities and programs for first generation and ALANA undergraduate students in the UMass College of Social & Behavioral Sciences. The program expresses our College's commitment to diversity and to providing a supportive community so that students can better develop their academic and leadership potential.
Study Abroad in South Africa
This seven-week program at the University of Cape Town will earn you a semester's worth of UMass credits (13-15) in disciplines such as Political Science, History, Economics, and Sociology. Courses will be taught by both UMass and UCT professors and you'll be studying alongside students from Africa, Asia, and the Pacific in this immersive experience. The total cost for the program (including tuition, airfare, housing, and food) is thousands of dollars less than a semester of in-state tuition and on-campus housing at UMass! Scholarships are also available to help support you to participate in this program. *While this program is technically open to all UMass students, priority is given to SBS students.
The SBS Shadows program provides one-day job shadowing experiences that give students the opportunity to spend time with alumni or other hosts in their place of work. Through observation and conversation, students will learn more about a profession, receive career-related advice, and see first-hand how their experience in the UMass Amherst College of Social & Behavioral Sciences can prepare them for life after college.
