SBS Senior Celebration Schedule

This ceremony, which individually recognizes all SBS graduates, is in addition to Friday's Undergraduate Commencement. At the SBS Senior Celebration we will call each graduate’s name, present a UMass Amherst medallion, and congratulate him/her individually while a professional photographer captures the moment. Tickets are not required, and seniors may invite as many guests as they wish. Traffic on and around campus will be heavy. SBS guests are requested to park in Lots 33, 22, and 21, directly opposite Southwest Residential Complex, off University Drive. Meals are available for purchase at Hampshire and Berkshire Dining Commons, from 7:00am to 10:00pm throughout commencement weekend. Concession stands in the Mullins Center will sell assorted sandwiches and other foods prior to the SBS Senior Celebration.
11:00am: SBS families and guests begin to arrive. Park in Lots 33, 22, and 21, opposite the Southwest Residential Complex, off University Drive. You may also choose to walk. Information on accessibility is available here.
Graduates: please wear or bring your cap and gown! Also, wear shoes that are appropriate for walking and climbing stairs. There is an elevator available in the Mullins Center for those with mobility issues. In the past, some graduates and guests have worn stiletto heels and have had difficulty maneuvering the various walkways. We highly recommend against this type of shoe for your own safety.
Guests: From the bus, you will be directed to the Main Entrance at the top of stairs.
Those with mobility impairments: An elevator is available. Use the Northwest Entrance on the lower level by the bus stop.
If you choose to walk: Use the Main Entrance via Commonwealth Avenue.
12:00pm: Graduates and faculty proceed to the Registration Tent behind the Mullins Center. Remember to wear your cap and gown. Listen to your department leaders for ceremony instructions.
Graduates: You must fill out a card with your name for the reader and contact information for the photographers. Cards will be available at the registration table in your designated area. Fill out your name card as soon as you get to the tent and proceed to Mullins Center to be seated prior to the beginning of the ceremony. Do not lose this card. Students will be seated by major.
All participating faculty should plan to meet in the tent behind Mullins Center no later than 12:00pm, and must line up with their departments, which will be clearly marked. All faculty will be seated on stage, faculty with active roles in the ceremony (handshakers, banner carriers, and Outstanding Teaching Award recipients) will be seated in the first few rows on stage, and will have clearly marked reserved seating to ensure they can easily access the front of the stage when needed. Other faculty can sit wherever they choose on stage in the remaining rows.
1:00pm: SBS Senior Celebration begins. Please silence all cell phones at this time. The program includes a brief processional faculty and senior speaker, welcome and congratulations from Dean John Hird. Please rise during the processional. Each department and program will offer remarks from the student speaker. All names of that group's participating majors will be read, individuals will cross the stage to shake hands with dignitaries, and medallions will be presented. A recessional follows. We ask that you please be courteous to fellow students and their guests, and remain for the entire ceremony.
2:30pm: SBS Senior Celebration ends. Please exit promptly so the Mullins Center staff can prepare the arena for the next ceremony. Buses will be available, departing from the Northwest Entrance area of the Mullins Center, lower level, for Lots 33, 22, and 21.
Graduates and guests please:
• We ask that you be please courteous to fellow students and guests and remain for the entire SBS Senior Celebration.
• Turn all cell phones off.
• Please keep in mind that even though the SBS Senior Celebration takes place indoors, getting around on campus may require sunscreen, umbrellas, shoes appropriate for walking, etc.
• Keep an eye on the weather forecast and come prepared.
• Before the festivities begin, to lessen confusion later, we urge graduates to establish a family meeting place after the ceremony.
• Please remember that another event follows the SBS Senior Celebration. Therefore, it is important to leave the building in a timely manner.
• Busses will be available from the Mullins Center (lower level, Northwest entrance, see map.) to transport individuals back to Parking Lots 33, 22, and 21.
