Information gathering is an important step in your career development process. The more you know about various majors, career fields, industries and specific jobs and companies, the more confidence you will have moving toward a career path. That confidence will allow you to find the job, internship, or volunteer opportunity that is right for you.
Explore Majors and Careers
Choosing a major is NOT the same as choosing a career! Your major is only one part of who you are as a job applicant. You will have many other experiences - internships, volunteering, club and organization participation, etc, that will show employers the well rounded person that you are. The purpose of your major is not to prepare you for a specific job, but rather to prepare you for life by developing skills such as writing, researching, problem solving, and critical thinking that are important in any profession. Major in what is interesting to you and what you enjoy. Explore majors by talking to professors, upperclassmen, and alumni.
Our SBS Career Explorer tool will provide you with insight on various career fields, courses you might consider taking if you want to pursue a particular path, the types of activities alumni in that field did while they were at Amherst, and profiles of alumni working in the field, including what they majored in while at UMass.
