UMass Amherst alums receive cornerstone author award

Dr. Bill Yousman (’04 PhD) and Dr. Lori Bindig (’09 PhD), alumni of the Department of Communication at UMass Amherst, have received the 2017 Cornerstone Author Award from Sage Publishing for their work as the new editors of Gender, Race, and Class in Media: A Critical Reader, 5th edition, which was released in December 2017.  The Cornerstone Author Award honors first-rate scholarship, quality writing, and lasting impact of the work.

Sage approached Yousman and Bindig in 2016 to be the primary editors of the fifth and future editions at the recommendation of the original editors Dr. Gail Dines, Professor Emerita of Wheelock College, and Dr. Jean Humez, Professor Emerita of the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Dines explains, “The two scholars I trusted the most to maintain the quality and integrity of the book were Dr. Yousman and Dr. Bindig.  I knew that they both had the theoretical depth required to edit such a book, while also being steeped in the latest scholarship. In addition, their commitment to multicultural media education made them the perfect candidates.”

Along with serving as a primary editor, Yousman’s scholarship on media and the social construction of racial ideologies is featured in the new edition of the book.   Dr. Yousman said, “It is our hope that the new edition of GRC will be well-received by adopters of previous editions while also reaching faculty and students who may be new to the field of critical media studies.”
