SBS undergraduate Hannah Karcinell Speaks at Gun Violence Awareness Event

Dozens of people gathered at UMass Amherst Monday night to learn about gun violence from a former Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student.
Hannah Karcinell was a student at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in 2018. She's now a first-year student at UMass Amherst studying Political Science.
Karcinell spoke about gun violence awareness at UMass' Integrative Learning Center Monday night. She was joined by Manuel Oliver, whose son was killed in the February 14th Parkland school shooting.
"It's been a year so far, we just closed out the loop of that first year and apparently not many things have changed, so we need to keep on doing what we're doing," said Oliver.
"Even if the people in this room haven't been affected by gun violence, it's so important to hear about it before you're affected," said Karcinell.
Seventeen students were killed during the Stoneman Douglas school shooting, including Manuel's son Joaquin and Hannah's friend Nick.
It's considered the deadliest high school shooting in American history.
