Diversity in Social Data Science Leadership Academy (DS2)

Thursday, August 5, 2021

The Diversity in Social Data Science (DS2) Leadership Academy is a free multi-day event designed to support UMass students interested in data-driven careers related to the social sciences as they look to begin the job-seeking process. The rise of “big data” has transformed employment in many industries and occupations, including many roles that historically required a substantive background in social science. These new data-driven jobs span the gamut from decision-making positions that require the ability to read and critically interpret evidence-based reports, to highly skilled analyst and social data scientist positions.

The growth of new data-driven careers in fields linked to the social sciences provides an exciting opportunity to address the well-documented underrepresentation of women and people of color in data science and STEM fields more broadly. The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) at UMass has the most diverse student population at UMass, and the new Data Analytics and Computational Social Science (DACSS) program (housed in SBS) provides advanced data analytics training to students with social science backgrounds. DS2 was developed by DACSS students who wanted to create a forum for a diverse community of students interested in data-driven careers to learn from UMass alum and support each other as they leave UMass and start their own career journeys.

All UMass undergraduate and graduate students interested in data-driven careers requiring a substantive social science background are welcome. Priority will be given to current DACSS students enrolled in the in-person MS program or the online Professional Development seminar (DACSS 698P). All other university students (grad and undergrad) are eligible to apply and will be accepted as space allows. Priority is given to students from underrepresented backgrounds.

Please fill out the application linked below by Friday, August 20th if you are interested in attending. If you have any questions, contact
