SBS Spring Study Abroad Scholarship

About the award: This scholarship opportunity is made available through generous donations from alumni of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, in particular, Mr. Jeffrey Katz ’69 and Mr. Philip Norment '81.

Eligibility: Any student with a major in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences who plans to study abroad during the spring 2016 semester is eligible to apply for this scholarship. Applicants must be participating in programs approved by the UMass International Programs Office.

Selection: Based on financial need and/or academic excellence, a committee chooses recipients in the fall semester for travel abroad in the spring. Approximately twenty scholarships will be given this academic year with an average award of $1,000. All applicants will be notified of the scholarship committee's decisions by email by December 8, 2015.

Deadline to apply: Thursday, November 12, 2015 

The recipients of this award will be expected to:

  • Write a thank-you letter to the donors of the SBS Study Abroad Scholarship upon return from the study abroad program.
  • Attend an informal scholarship reception with Dean John Hird and other scholarship recipients. (Date to be determined).

Statement and Essay

Please provide an essay (no more than 300 words) that describes the academic, personal and professional goals you hope to achieve through study abroad. Note: Before you enter your text into the online form, you may wish to write the essay separately and then paste it into the space provided.
