When Public Engagement Comes with Public Harassment How to Prevent, Respond, and Support Faculty
As an institution, UMass Amherst encourages its faculty to expand their outreach and engagement with the public. Yet greater public-facing scholarship carries the risk of exposing faculty to public harassment, in an increasingly polarized media context in which offensive and/or inflammatory reactions can be spread widely and with ease.
During this session, Jennifer Lundquist and Ed Blaguszewski will discuss this trend and the strategies that UMass faculty and administrators may use to prevent and respond to public harassment and to support faculty if and when it occurs. Time will also be reserved for questions and discussion, and for faculty attending the session to discuss related concerns and experiences in breakout groups.
