All admitted PhD Students are automatically considered for funding through teaching or research assistantships. No separate application is required. Funding decisions are made by the Department of Resource Economics, not by individual faculty members. Students are typically matched with research advisors after completing initial coursework.

If chosen to receive funding, one can expect the following:

  • Annual Stipend
  • Tuition Waiver
  • Health Insurance including dental, vision, and wellness benefits
  • Fee reductions
  • Parking discounts
  • Time Off

In addition, the department also provides travel grants for students to present at conferences.

Additional summer funding is available from the department. Other funding opportunities also exist through the UMass Graduate School like the REAL Fellowship.

Funding is guaranteed for five years, contingent upon satisfactory academic progress as defined in the department’s Graduate Handbook. Students are expected to meet academic benchmarks, maintain good standing, and make timely progress toward degree completion.
