Bread and Puppet is a world renowned anti-capitalist theater company that has peformed with their signature puppets for over 50 years. It is one of the oldest street and protest theater companies in the world. The troupe will perform: The Essential Furthermore.
The show draws on the peasant rebellions of the 1400 and 1500s to address the need for insurrection against the status quo of planetary ecological collapse, and hostility to the refugees created by natural and human-made disasters. The show demonstrates the power of mass political and social movements with massive dances in Bread and Puppet’s pedestrian expressionist “Lubberland” style, building momentum as the piece grows into a multivocal fugue on several themes of the moment: totalitarianism, extinction and “the normalization of the unthinkable”.
The theater troupe is looking for students to perform alongside them. No previous theater experience is necessary. Interested students can contact: Eli Bondar: ebondar@umass.edu for more information.
