George Barresi is not new to the UMass Tax School. Over the last 20 years, he has participated as a spokesman for the Massachusetts DOR updating tax practitioners on recent Massachusetts tax law changes as well as sharing his insight on federal tax law. During this span, George has also represented the Massachusetts DOR at practitioner groups in New Hampshire and other New England states. Although now retired from the Massachusetts DOR, he continues his enthusiasm for taxation as a staff member at Philip R. Dardeno, CPA and Associates.

Attorney Paul Bernstein is licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, having been admitted to the Bar in 1992. Paul Blais began his IRS career in 1965 as a Tax Examiner. After serving in the United States Army as a Medic, Paul became a Revenue Officer, a certified lead instructor and Supervisory Revenue Officer and was then designated as a Collection Subject Matter Expert. Receiving many awards over the years as both Revenue Officer and Group Manager, he received the United States Treasury Award. Paul has been Enrolled Agent for over 14 years and is currently associated with the office of Bean, Hatzis and Associates.
His perfect retirement job is at the Salem, NH Golf Course. Paul has been associated with the UMass Tax School since his retirement over 14 years ago. Paul lives in Salem, NH with his wife Fran. They have two sons Michael and Brian. His volunteer efforts include many years as soccer and baseball manager, Lazarus House Homeless Shelter Volunteer, Chairman of the Saint Alfio Society Scholarship Committee.

Chris Hawthorne became a licensed insurance broker as well as a licensed advisor to assist clients build, manage, coordinate and understand their commercial and personal insurance programs in 1994, after owning a business for eight years and experiencing the confusion, frustration and expense related to insurance. His goal being to have a client that has confidence in their coverage and has a sense of control over their program. Chris is a Regional Vice President of Cleary Insurance, Inc. He is a graduate of The George Washington University. Chris has earned the designations of Certified Insurance Counselor and Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter and he is the author of over 35 insurance-related articles as well as the cyber chapter for the 2017 National Income Tax Workbook.
He is a former instructor at the Boston Insurance Library for the CPCU and ARM programs and currently is a presenter for the UMass Tax School on insurance and risk management issues as well as an annual speaker for the Salem State University’s Continuing Education Institute for Accountants.
Kelly Lent-Paul EA, CFP, MBA
Kelly Lent-Paul holds the CFP®, ChFC, & EA professional designations and enjoys providing customized financial planning advice to her clients by first understanding their individual goals. She has been a tax advisor since 1994 and has been providing financial planning services since 1997.
Kelly earned her Bachelor of Science from Cornell University and her MBA in Finance and Accounting from St. Bonaventure University.
Kelly is frequent speaker to community groups on the topics of taxes and financial planning and is also a national instructor for a professional organization providing continuing education to other tax and financial planning professionals. She is a member of the National Association of Tax Professionals, Financial Planning Association, and the National Association of Enrolled Agents.
She is on the boards of several local non-profits organizations and lives in Allegany with her husband Jim.

Brian has been with DOR for over 30 years and is one of the Agency’s principal liaisons for its external stakeholders. As tax practitioners throughout the state prepare for filing season each year, Brian provides them with an update on administrative procedure and tax developments. He conducts DOR’s Small Business Workshops for new business owners to educate them on their responsibilities in Massachusetts. Brian also represents the Department at external speaking engagements on a variety of topics. He specializes in training the Department’s new hires and is also a certified CPR instructor.

Les A Marti is an Enrolled Agent (EA) who has been in the tax planning and preparation business since 1987, forming his own business in 1997. Les incorporated and renamed the business LesTax Ltd in 2015.
Les is also an income tax author and instructor, teaching other tax preparers how to minimize their clients’ tax burdens. He began teaching tax seminars in 2005, and has taught thousands of preparers not only in Illinois, but from coast-to-coast as well. The experience gained through teaching hones the skills to be sure each LesTax client gets the best outcome on their tax return.

Cheryl Morse is the Director of UMass Tax School. Cheryl has been a tax practitioner since 1982 and an Enrolled Agent since 1996. She is the Tax Manager for Emerging Business Partners, Incorporated, which prepares over 1500 tax returns in three offices-locally at 244 Washington Place. Cheryl graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. degree in accounting from Bentley College in Waltham, MA.
In addition to instructing for NATP and the UMass Tax School, she educates taxpayers through a variety of community outreach events, and by being a contributing author for Forbes. She served on the Massachusetts Board of NATP as treasurer, represented the Northeast Region of the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel, as Chair, and is a contributor to the development of the IRS EA Examination.
Chuck Stephens, CPA
Chuck Stephens is a Certified Public Accountant and a Chartered Global Management Accountant who has worked with individuals and small business owners his entire adult life. After graduating from Kennesaw State University, he obtained his license to practice as a CPA in 1983. After working in CPA Firms, he opened his own firm in 1990 in Franklin, GA.
Chuck specializes in guidance on tax business matters to individuals and small business owners to help them make the most of their financial assets. He is a QuickBooks ProAdvisor, and fluent with Sage 50 (Peachtree). Chuck is an instructor for the National Association of Tax Professionals, National Association of Realtors, Georgia Society of CPAs and also taught for the University of Georgia.
Chuck is a member of the American Institute of CPA’s and the Georgia Society of CPA’s. He is also Treasurer of the Heard County Development Authority, former member of the Georgia Society of CPA’s Ethics Committee, former Treasurer of the Heard County Lions Club.
When Chuck is not caught up in the hustle and bustle of tax season he really enjoys riding his yellow Honda Goldwing motorcycle.

Odette Turenne is a Senior Stakeholder Liaison with the Stakeholder Liaison office of the Internal Revenue Service Communications & Liaison Division. She began her career with the Internal Revenue Service 34 years ago as a Revenue Agent in the Examination Division of the Small Business/Self-Employed Operating Division of IRS. Currently, as a Senior Stakeholder Liaison, Odette represents the IRS at education and outreach events and works with tax professionals, payroll providers, industry and trade associations, small business owners, and other federal, state and local government agencies. She speaks at organization meetings, conferences, seminars, forums, and workshops on tax related topics relevant to the tax professional or small business audience.Odette is a graduate of Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting
John Warren, EA

John Warren is an enrolled agent, NTPI fellow and active member of NATP & NAEA. He organizes tax talk round tables across the state and often leads tax presentations in Amherst, Fall River, Attleboro, North Reading, Worcester, Jamaica Plain, Chelsea, Medford, Hyannis and New Bedford. He is a co-host of the Lower Cape TV program, “The Tax Experts.” He is a regular speaker in Cambridge, Arlington and Medford at bank sponsored events. This summer John taught a portion of the SEE Prep Exam in Natick. His tax practice is in West Medford, “The Medford Tax Experts.”
John began his tax career writing software for the corporate tax group at Digital Equipment in Acton. He worked for ten years as a compliance analyst for a do-it-yourself tax software product. John sat on the MA DOR Advisory Council for several years. In 2017, he spearheaded first in the nation legislation to fund low income clinics to resolve MA DOR controversies. In 2018, he initiated the successful effort to conform MA codified regulations to the Internal Revenue Code with regards to equitable relief for Innocent Spouse claims. Just recently he joined the federal Collection Due Process Summit Initiative.
