Testing the Waters: Chemists Develop Biosensors to Detect Bacteria

UMass Amherst chemist Vincent Rotello and his team of student researchers have developed a pocket-sized, paper sensing strip using nano biosensors that when dipped into water detects trace amounts of bacteria. The new technology may prove to be an invaluable tool in the developing world where more than one billion people do not have access to clean, safe drinking water and millions die each year from water-born diseases.
