Timber Dome: Designing with Wood to Showcase New Applications
The image above depicts part of a massive wooden dome–known in technical circles as a timber grid shell–along with its cast shadows. Engineered and constructed by UMass Amherst students in the building and construction technology program, the dome temporarily adorns the plaza of the campus's Fine Arts Center. The students constructed the dome as part of a wood design studio class taught by green building expert Peggi Clouston. The grid shell is part of a larger effort to promote awareness of new wood composites and to demonstrate how wood can be used in high-tech applications. Learn more.
