Sustainable Sensor: New Chemical Sensor Uses Protein Nanowires To Allow High-precision Sensing
The image above shows how a new chemical sensor uses protein nanowires to allow for high-precision sensing. The nanowires are derived from Geobacter, a versatile bacterium which was discovered in the mud of the Potomac River more than 30 years ago by UMass Amherst microbiologist Derek Lovley. The protein nanowires (light green), which are harvested from Geobacter (background), are sandwiched between electrodes (gold) to form a bioelectronic sensor for detection of biomolecules (red). In addition to superior function and low cost, the sensors are biodegradable, producing no electronic waste, and they are produced sustainably without the need for toxic chemicals. Read More.
