Roll-To-Roll: Fabricating Nanoscale Materials to Produce “Smart Skin”
The image above depicts a NanoEmboss tool used in advanced roll-to-roll nanofabrication. It allows researchers to coat and pattern nanoscale materials on inexpensive sheets of plastic or fabric in a continuous fabrication process. There are few tools in the world that can carry out these operations and UMass is at the forefront of this research. In one project, UMass Amherst polymer scientists Kenneth Carter and James Watkins and colleagues are developing nanotube-based fabric that repels chemical and biological agents. Membrane and layer fabrication of this “smart second skin” will take place in part through the university’s Roll-to-Roll Nanofabrication Laboratory. Learn more.
